Emanuel Felke: The Clay Pastor

In the late 1800s, a humble German pastor began treating people not with pills or surgery, but with sunshine, clay, and fresh air. His name was Emanuel Felke, and his approach—known as the Jungborn method—offered a radical return to nature in an age of industrial medicine. Today, his ideas feel surprisingly fresh, especially for those looking to reconnect with the healing power of the earth.
Who Was Emanuel Felke?
Emanuel Felke (1856–1926) was a Lutheran pastor and natural healer who believed the body could restore itself when supported by the elements: earth, air, water, light, and natural food.
Known as the “Clay Pastor”, Felke’s treatments often involved patients sleeping outdoors on beds of straw, bathing in cold water, walking barefoot, and covering themselves in healing loam or clay. He founded open-air healing centers called Jungborns—simple, rustic retreats where people could rest, detox, and heal under the sky. Felke also practiced homeopathy and iris diagnosis, combining traditional insight with natural care.
What made him unique was not just his remedies, but his philosophy: true healing happens when we strip away excess, slow down, and return to our natural rhythms.
How to Try Felke’s Method at Home (Simply and Inexpensively)
You don’t need a German spa or acres of forest to benefit from Felke’s teachings. Here are a few simple ways to try his elemental healing practices at home:
1. Clay Foot Soak or Body Wrap
Buy some healing clay or loam powder (bentonite or green clay works well).
Mix it with warm water into a thick paste.
Apply to feet, legs, or lower back, wrap with a towel, and rest for 20–30 minutes.
Rinse off in the shower or outside with a bucket of water.
Felke believed clay could draw toxins out through the skin and reconnect the body with the earth.
2. Air and Light Baths
Spend 10–15 minutes each morning barefoot outdoors, even in cooler weather.
Let the sunlight touch your skin, ideally before 9 AM or after 4 PM for safety.
Breathe slowly and deeply—this is an air bath: no soap, just exposure.
Felke encouraged fresh air and light as natural tonics for the nervous system and immune health.
3. Cold Water Therapy
End your shower with 30 seconds of cool or cold water, especially on the feet and legs.
Or, soak your feet in cold water for 5 minutes after walking or working.
Cold water tones the circulation and was one of Felke’s most essential tools.
4. Simple, Plant-Based Meals
Try a day or two per week of plant-focused meals: warm vegetables, herbal teas, fruits, nuts.
Felke advised moderation, simplicity, and eating with awareness.
