The Raisin Mindfulness Exercise is a popular mindfulness practice that has been adapted and used by many mindfulness teachers and practitioners over the years. It is not attributed to a specific individual creator. However, it is often associated with Jon Kabat-Zinn, a pioneer in the field of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). A raisin is a very practical choice but many other items of food can be used. In this post we'll experiment with a strawberry.

Look

As you gaze at the strawberry, take your time to observe its visual details. Notice the vibrant red color, the variations in shade and light, and any imperfections or blemishes on its surface. This step encourages you to be present and attentive to the visual aspects of the strawberry.

Touch

When you hold the strawberry in your hand, explore its texture with your fingertips. Pay attention to the sensations of its skin against your palm. Is it smooth, slightly rough, or perhaps covered in tiny hairs? By focusing on touch, you connect with the physical qualities of the strawberry. Bring the strawberry close to your nose and take in its aroma. Try to identify the specific scents it releases. Is there a sweet, fruity fragrance, or are there earthy undertones? This step engages your sense of smell and primes your taste buds for the upcoming experience.

Taste

Place the strawberry in your mouth but refrain from chewing immediately. Let it rest on your tongue, and notice the sensations it creates. Pay attention to its temperature, texture, and any initial bursts of flavor. When you finally take a bite, savor the taste without swallowing right away. Explore the intricate flavors that unfold as you chew slowly.

Hear

While you chew the strawberry, listen to the sounds it makes inside your mouth. Notice the crunching, squishing, or any other noises that emerge. This step encourages you to be fully attuned to the auditory aspects of eating.

Swallow

When you decide to swallow the strawberry, do so mindfully. Pay close attention to the natural instinct to swallow and the sensations as the strawberry travels down your throat into your stomach. Observe the movement of your tongue and the throat muscles involved in this process.

Afterwards

After consuming the strawberry, reflect on your experience. Notice how your mouth feels in the aftermath. Are there lingering flavors or an aftertaste? Observe any changes in sensation in your mouth, throat, or stomach. Be aware of any immediate impulses or desires to eat more. This final step allows you to reflect on the exercise's impact on your body and mind.
